Tombstone Inscriptions Found at Galena Hill

"I found these tombstones with inscriptions in an old cemetary at Galena Hill in 1974. There were a few other stones, weathered too much to make out inscriptions and others with no observable markings. There were several decayed and weathered wooden markers also, but either unreadable or had nothing on them. I returned to the location a few years later but found the area had been destroyed by logging operations. Signed, "Walking Willie", Bill Irving, October 15, 1993. (The inscriptions follow.)

"In memory of Jesse Watkins, Native of Kentucky, born Sept 4, 1827. Immigrated to California 1852. Came to his death by the caving of a bank July 15, 1854 - Alone and far from his Native home"

"Benjamin Ellis, Son of J. & J.R. Garnett, Born Oct 1, 1835, Killed in the digging, June 22, 1854, Requieo, Requieo, Eternal Eureka"

"Jane Ellis, Wife of J. Garnett, Born Apr. 3, 1814, Died Dec. 7, 1882, A Native of Ingleton Co., York England, Rest Eternal Rest I Have Found It"
