Celestial Valley

On Oregon Creek two miles from Middle Yuba. It received its name because many Chinese (400 by some estimates) lived here during the Gold Rush years. There was even a hotel at one time. The area was settled by farmers and ranchers later on. The Butz family were early pioneers in the valley, and members of the family still live there.

Four generations of the Butz family were all born within twenty miles of Camptonville. When asked if she lived in Celestial Valley all her life, Lois Butz replied, "No. They brought me here when I was two weeks old!" Her great-grandparents moved from Brandy City to Oak Valley in the early days and carried their twin daughters on horseback, one baby to a saddlebag on either side of the horse.

Lois Butz remembers that the date of the latest snowfall during her time in Celestial Valley was May of 1942. She remembers because "it was the day before Grandmother Butz's house burned down. It took six weeks for them to rebuild it so that it was fit to live in, working just evenings and weekends because the men were working away from home."
