Camptonville School
The Camptonville Grammar School had about 40 students in two rooms for each semester. I was in the 4th grade and in the big room where I met classmate Leland Pauly and his mother, who was the teacher of grades 4 through 8. Because there were less than 100 people living within the boundaries of Camptonville proper, students came by bus from surrounding ranches, farms and sawmills to sit behind cast-iron framed desks.
Mr. Lang held the school bus contract and one of the busses was an old Packard for many years. In 1937 my mother's salary as principal was $80 per month, and the bus driver received $90 per month, which meant providing the bus, such as it was.
