Camptonville or Moonshine

Jim Delaney and I had been visiting Bob Cassano out past the Gold Pan Lodge carrying our new .22 caliber rifles in case we say anything to shoot at, like jack rabbits or rattlesnakes, when an automobile pulled alongside us, and the game warden stepped out.

"Are those guns loaded?" "Sure." "You know that you aren't allowed to carry a loaded gun wtihin 100 feet of the hightway. Unload them!" We didn't and did. Upon demand we told him where we lived, and his reply was "If you ever want a bad reputation, just live in Camptonville or Moonshine!"

Jim told me the game warden was still mad at the people of Moonshine for the warden had threatened one resident of Moonshine that he would catch them if they shot a deer out of season or without a license 'cause he knew they were doing it! As the warden proceeded down the Moonshine Road he had to stop to remove some brush from the road. A rifle shot rang out, and a bullet hole appeared in the warden's gasoline tank! The warden jumped into his auto, tore down the road, and was never seen in Moonshine again!
